In 2025, I dissected over $50,000 worth of luxury leather goods. Some pieces impressed beyond expectation, while others were complete disappointments. This year has been an eye-opening journey, and I want to share everything I learned, from the biggest letdowns to the most remarkable innovations in contemporary leather fashion.
In this blog, we will answer the following questions:
Which luxury leather brand or bag surprised you the most in 2025—either positively or negatively—and why?
Do you believe price still reflects true luxury, or are “sincere luxury” brands delivering better value than heritage houses today?
What qualities matter most to you when judging a leather bag—craftsmanship, materials, design, brand story, or price?
The first disappointment this year was Toteme’s belted tote bag, which I purchased for €1,000. This price point is higher than many more established brands in the luxury space, but unfortunately, the bag delivered only mediocrity. On every measure—leather quality, construction, design, and value—it was average. There was nothing in this bag to justify the price tag, and it serves as a reminder that brand name alone does not equal true luxury.
On the other end of the spectrum, Thaden’s Whole Bag blew me away. This brand is doing something entirely different in the contemporary space, creating designs that are innovative rather than derivative. This bag embodies what modern leather innovation should look like: thoughtful design, exceptional craftsmanship, and a fresh perspective that sets it apart from the crowd.
@tanner.leatherstein In 2025, I dissected over 40 leather goods from more than 30 brands, and what we found was a mix of real gems and a lot of broken hype. #Leatherverse #LuxuryDissected #LuxuryUnderTheKnife #LuxuryTok #LeatherTok #LuxuryReview #2025Recap #TannerLeatherstein ♬ original sound - Tanner Leatherstein
Tied between two Parisian brands, Le Tanneur’s small crossbody bag and Fleuron’s mini Swan bag each struck a balance across my five evaluation pillars: leather quality, construction, design, versatility, and value. Priced between €400 and €500, both bags deliver premium leather selection, smart construction, and practical elegance. They demonstrate that thoughtful design and quality can be accessible without compromising luxury.
The standout of 2025 was undoubtedly the Ferragamo Hug Bag. This is the first bag in my entire testing history to score perfect fives across all five pillars. Every detail, from the leather to the hardware, construction, and design, reflects true luxury. For me, this bag defines what heritage and craftsmanship should mean in 2025.
Luxury leather goods don’t exist in a vacuum. This year, I had the privilege of meeting some of the brilliant minds behind the products I dissected:
Songmont (China): Finally, Chinese craftsmanship leading rather than copying. Their Luna bag proved that innovation and technical skill can come from anywhere.
Strathberry (Scotland): Multiple impressive dissections led to meeting the founders in Edinburgh, revealing genuine passion and vision in contemporary leather fashion.
Manu Atelier (Turkey): My home country delivered a pleasant surprise. Manu Atelier’s vision and storytelling are compelling, and their journey deserves its own deep dive next year.
Ferragamo (Italy): Unlike many heritage houses, Ferragamo demonstrated the authenticity behind the legacy they claim, showing their craftsmanship first-hand.
Stow London (UK): After winning the best value award last year, Stow continues to embody the philosophy of what we call “sincere luxury”—products made with integrity, quality, and honest pricing.
What matters most is that the market is changing. Real people, real craft, honest pricing are winning over the corporate luxury theater. Every purchase you make, every brand you choose to support, signals a shift toward conscious luxury—one that values authenticity over marketing hype.
In 2026, our journey goes deeper. I plan to explore the psychology of modern luxury, fashion, and lifestyle beyond leather. The goal is to help you discern real quality from expensive illusions, empowering conscious carriers in every decision they make.
So, my friends, thank you for your incredible support this year. Please share—which bag shocked you the most in 2025? Until next time, stay leathertained!
