Dissecting Thaden’s The Whole Red: bold design, sharp folds, and honest craftsmanship. Here’s how it held up in the Rip My Bag Challenge.

When I first saw Thaden’s Whole Bag online, I was instantly captivated. The photos revealed a sculpted silhouette so unique that I knew this wasn’t just another luxury handbag — it was art. And sure enough, when I learned more about the designer, Kristina Thaden, it all made sense. Based in Switzerland, Thaden’s mission is to create wearable pieces of art for women. Her philosophy is deeply embedded in every curve, fold, and contour of her creations.

Each design in her collection carries a hidden artistic message — you don’t just see it, you feel it. And when this particular piece arrived at my studio, sent personally by Kristina while it was still in production, I knew I was about to experience something remarkable.

DISCLAIMER: The “Rip My Bag Challenge” is a review series that tests leather products’ quality, price, and craftsmanship. While the brand supports the challenge financially, my opinions stay fair, unbiased, and truthful. Products featured are purchased anonymously without brand involvement. Let's dive into the leatherverse again —one review, one dissection, and one video at a time.

In this blog, we will answer the following questions:

  • What makes Thaden’s Whole Bag stand out from other luxury handbags?
  • How is the bag engineered and constructed to achieve its unique shape?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses in its craftsmanship, leather, and hardware?
  • Does the €2,600 price tag reflect fair value for what you get?
  • And ultimately — is Thaden’s Whole Bag worth it?

Thaden's First Impressions: A Unique Engineering Feat

Opening the box for the first time, I immediately noticed craftsmanship details I had never seen before. The shape held perfectly while still being flexible and accessible. Both sides offered a surprising amount of space, and the folds flowed seamlessly.

From a design perspective, it’s a six out of five — absolutely killer. Every line, every curve speaks of intentionality. This isn’t a bag that follows trends; it creates them.

That said, there were small imperfections: a few scratches on the hardware, likely from assembly, and a slightly smudged edge paint in a tricky area that might prove vulnerable over time. But these are minor issues on an otherwise exceptional piece.

The Ingenious Construction

Dissecting this bag was like studying a masterclass in leather engineering. The complexity behind how it curves and folds into shape is astounding. Multiple layers of leather are meticulously skived and layered to create flexibility where needed, while maintaining structure in the base and gussets.

The gusset curves naturally without resistance, supported by strategically placed reinforcement materials — including an acrylic base that provides stability. The craftsmanship and the technical design thinking behind this are nothing short of brilliant.

Every part of this bag tells a story of innovation and precision. It’s evident that a tremendous amount of thought went into balancing aesthetics with functionality. For that, the engineering easily earns a five-star rating — with a flying star on top.

Craftsmanship: Almost Flawless

When evaluating craftsmanship, Thaden’s Whole Bag stands tall among artisanal creations. The stitching appears hand-done, particularly where the bottom meets the body — an extremely challenging area in leatherwork.

However, small details like faint smudges on the hardware and minor imperfections in the edge painting slightly affect the overall score. These are easy fixes but worth noting for a brand that’s clearly reaching for perfection.

Craftsmanship score: 4.5/5.

The Leather: Good, But Could Be Better

The outer leather looks and feels like semi-aniline Nappa — smooth, soft, and supple. However, on closer inspection, I found small finish marks and light buffing that indicate some surface correction. This means it’s top-grain rather than full-grain — not the very highest grade available.

The inner lining, on the other hand, uses fine lambskin with a beautifully clean finish — arguably better than the exterior. For a piece this artistic, I’d love to see the same level of excellence reflected in the leather choice next time.

Leather score: 3.5/5.

Hardware: Thoughtful, but Not Perfect

The hardware design reflects immense attention to detail — each piece custom-branded and meaningful. From hooks engraved with motivational quotes like “You deserve love” to branded buckles, it’s clear that every part was thoughtfully designed.

The downside? The coating isn’t the most durable. Scratches revealed a goldish brass base beneath, confirming that while the hardware material is quality, the plating could be improved for longevity.

Hardware score: 4/5.

The Real Cost of Artistry

This bag’s material cost is surprisingly modest — about €50 worth of leather and €15 worth of hardware, totaling roughly €65 in raw materials. However, what truly drives up the value here is the assembly. The level of precision, shaping, layering, and reinforcement work that goes into making this design simply can’t be automated or mass-produced.

At a retail price of €2,650 (including VAT), the brand likely nets around €2,100 after taxes. Given the labor intensity and artistry involved, this price is not exaggerated. It’s the cost of creation, not marketing.

Verdict: The Price of True Art

So, is Thaden’s Whole Bag worth €2,600?

If you measure value purely by materials, no. But if you appreciate the art, engineering, and creativity that go into crafting something truly one-of-a-kind, then absolutely yes.

This is not a bag for everyone — it’s for those who see handbags as art forms rather than accessories. It’s the kind of piece you display, admire, and maybe even pass down. It’s a trophy bag, not just a functional item.

And perhaps that’s why it even made an appearance in Emily in Paris — a fitting spotlight for something this bold and artistic.

With a few refinements — slightly better leather, stronger hardware plating, and even gentler assembly handling — this bag could reach perfection. But even as it stands, it’s a remarkable achievement in modern leather artistry.

Criteria Score Results

Engineering 5 Highly organized, sophisticated shape and form engineering with high-quality materials inside the craft.

OVERALL SCORE 4.4 Very good example of great quality for a great price without any risk to try
PRICE/COST MULTIPLIER
7x Fair Value for quality with a brand premium.

Final Thoughts: A Win for Leather Lovers

If one of the legacy luxury houses tried to make a bag like this, the price tag would easily exceed €10,000 — and they probably wouldn’t even attempt it, as it’s too complex for mass production.

Kristina Thaden has achieved something rare: a blend of sculpture, craftsmanship, and design that pushes the boundaries of what a handbag can be.

So, yes — for those who value creativity over conformity, Thaden’s Whole Bag is worth every cent.
