the path we took & where we're going next
Our founders, Volkan and Ariel, grew up across the world, in their respective hometowns in Turkey and Taiwan. Volkan grew up in a family of generational leather craftsmen in his small village, where he worked in leather tanneries and began designing his own crafts at a young age.
Both Volkan and Ariel came to the united states for graduate school at university of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. When Volkan first arrived to the United States, he worked as a cab driver and studied for his MBA. Ariel was studying for her masters information technology. eventually, the two met and fell in love.
After graduation, Volkan and Ariel moved to Chicago from rural Illinois, where they worked as consultants for business and it. After a few years, Volkan realized that there was something missing from his life. He missed his days spent in his family's tanneries and Making new leather creations in his workshop.
After traveling around the world, Volkan and Ariel also knew that they needed to find a way to give back. They realized how fortunate their childhoods had been and how their upbringing and education allowed them to become successful, pursue their dreams, and explore the world. After seeing the conditions that many children grow up with, and the lack of educational opportunities in many countries, they knew something needed to change.
Through combining their skills and experiences, Volkan and Ariel founded Pegai. They started this company as a way to give back to the children around the world, supporting their rights to education through product sale donations.
We're forging ahead on this goal, by creating the highest quality, handcrafted products and focusing on ethical, sustainable approaches to design and production. At Pegai, we have a people-first approach and never forget our roots.
Everything we do is to lift up the next generation.
