When a large, hefty box arrived at my studio for the Rip My Shoes Challenge, I immediately noticed something unusual. This time, it wasn’t a handbag. Instead, it was a pair of boots—premium-looking, weighty, and beautifully packaged. The submission came anonymously through my spy network, meaning Fairfax & Favor had no idea their product was about to face my dissecting table.

At first glance, everything from the packaging to the presentation felt undeniably luxurious. But the real question remained: does this brand deliver boots worthy of their €555 price tag?

In this blog, we will answer the following questions:

  • Are Fairfax & Favor boots genuinely worth the €555 price tag?

  • Does the construction, craftsmanship, and material quality justify the brand premium?

  • How do the boots perform in real-world use and dissection compared to expectations?

First Impressions of the Fairfax & Favor Boots

Opening the box revealed a pair of suede boots that immediately stood out. The suede had a dry, velvety touch—an indicator of high-quality material—and the overall construction looked solid. The sole combined leather and plastic components, with most of the base made from leather while the heel and front areas incorporated durable plastic for reinforcement. The structure appeared thoughtfully engineered, and even before cutting anything open, the boots gave off the impression of being genuinely well made.

Given the nature of the product, I decided to get a second opinion from someone who actually wears boots like these regularly—my wife. Before performing any dissection, I let her wear them for a couple of days to get a real-world usage review.

Test Drive Results: My Wife’s Take

These boots are the most expensive pair my wife has ever worn, and she noticed the upgrade in quality right away. The bright orange interior lining felt plush and comfortable, and overall she was impressed with the feel and fit. Her only complaint was the height of the shaft, which she felt was slightly tall for her frame. She believed the boot would be a better fit for taller women. Beyond that minor note, she genuinely enjoyed wearing them and appreciated the craftsmanship and comfort.

Design: A Solid Four

The design of the Fairfax & Favor boots deserves praise. The silhouette, materials, and construction reflect a clear and intentional design approach. From the layered leather sole to the internal stabilizers, every element supports the shape and longevity of the boot. Even after cutting through the tough structure, the durability was apparent. The design held up visually and structurally, earning a confident score of four.

Structure and Engineering: Built with Purpose

The sole structure revealed thoughtful engineering. Two layers of sole leather were stacked above stabilizing materials, creating a solid foundation. Cutting through the combination of leather and plastic proved surprisingly difficult, which speaks positively to the boot’s integrity. Even though I’m not a shoe-structure expert, it was obvious the boot was built to hold its shape and provide reliable comfort. This solid performance deserved another four.

Craftsmanship: Clean and Consistent

Craftsmanship often separates good products from great ones, and these boots leaned toward the latter. Made in Portugal—a region known for quality shoemaking—the boots showed clean workmanship inside and out. There were no messy edges, misaligned stitches, or noticeable flaws. Everything looked intentional and controlled, earning a well-deserved score of four.

Hardware: Simple but Strong

The only hardware component on the boots is the zipper, an essential part for this style. Fairfax & Favor used a YKK zipper, which is widely considered one of the better options on the market. Even though the hardware is minimal, it aligns perfectly with the boot’s overall quality, justifying yet another score of four.

Leather Quality: Excellent Suede with Protective Finish

The suede selected for these boots is genuinely high-grade. It features a light water-resistant treatment and a thin pigmented finish that protects the surface while maintaining the natural feel of the leather. The interior lining leather is smooth, thin, and comfortable—exactly what a boot lining should be. Constructing a boot of this size requires around eight square feet of suede for the exterior and roughly the same for the lining. The total leather material cost falls between €50 and €55 before adding the sole and structural components. Considering the finish, feel, and suitability of the materials, the leather selection earns a strong score of four.

Cost Breakdown: How Much Do These Boots Really Cost to Make?

Understanding the true value of a product requires examining the material and production costs. The leather alone—both exterior suede and interior lining—totals approximately €50 to €55. When adding the layered leather sole, stabilizers, and plastic reinforcements, the raw material cost surpasses €60. Production in Portugal, known for higher labor standards and skilled craftsmanship, adds another significant cost layer, though exact figures are difficult to pinpoint without factory-level data. Altogether, it’s clear that Fairfax & Favor invests in quality materials and reliable manufacturing. Although the €555 retail price includes a noticeable brand premium, the structural integrity and overall craftsmanship justify much of the cost.

Criteria Score Results
Leather 4 Good leathers for the application in hand. Coming from environmentally conscious tanneries
Hardware 4 Common alloy or brass hardware with high-quality plating and thin protection that will last a good while.
Design 4 A creative take on a classical design concept
Engineering 4 Clean and quality inner support materials and structure
Craftsmanship 4 Perfect machine stitching with excellent edge finishing. Immaculate inside and out, with no visible flaws, showing a commitment to quality.
OVERALL SCORE 4 Very good example of great quality for a great price without any risk to try

Final Verdict: Are Fairfax & Favor Boots Worth the Price?

With consistent scores of four across all categories—design, structure, craftsmanship, hardware, and leather—the Fairfax & Favor boots stand out as a premium, well-constructed product. While the €555 price tag certainly reflects some branding, the underlying build quality supports the majority of the cost.

After dissecting the boots and hearing my wife’s first-hand experience, I’m happy with how they performed on the table and in daily use. The next time I’m in the UK, I’ll likely stop by one of their stores to explore their bags and other leather goods. If these boots are any indication, the brand may have more impressive pieces worth investigating.
